Does your patient really have ADHD?

Or is something else going on?

If he's well-spoken, highly inquisitive or has unusual interests for his age, it may be the latter:

Many clinicians aren’t aware that two common traits of giftedness look a lot like ADHD. Gifted kids have more diverse neural pathways, so their brains have larger amounts of data to sift through – and it can be difficult to focus on what’s "most important." Many also have a psychomotor overexcitability that makes it hard to sit still and, in some cases, sleep.

Want to learn more? Get my free misdiagnosis cheat sheet. In addition to ADHD, it highlights why gifted kids can appear to have OCD, Asperger’s and sensory processing disorder.

You’ll also receive a weekly newsletter that investigates why other gifted children are misdiagnosed with:

- oppositional defiant disorder
- bipolar disorder
- insomnia
- hypersomnia
- several other disorders

Needless to say, this type of neurodiversity goes way beyond intellect and academics. (And for many kids and their parents, it feels like a curse; not a gift.)

As a professional writer – and the mom of a “highly gifted” child who has several traits in common with Asperger’s patients – it has become my mission to research, and report on, these types of misdiagnoses.

I hope you’ll join me as I share what I’m learning from experts in this field, as well as the ways in which asynchronous development and overexcitabilities make daily appearances in my home. (Prepare yourself! Lol)

All the best,
